The owners of a well preserved manor house from the arts-and-crafts era wanted to increase the light, space and access to fabulous views across the valley. A contemporary extension that enhanced rather than challenged the historic building was requested by this very open client. The contours of the hillside were used to create a series of ‘viewing platforms’ with different functions connected by stairs that create varying levels of privacy. The use of rammed earth walls, large glass panels and a green roof create an architecture that emerges out of the landscape and natural context rather than as an additive building to the main house.
